Why Asphalt Shingles Fail

Asphalt shingles are manufactured with petroleum-based oils that serve three critical functions: they keep the asphalt flexible (preventing cracking), they bind the protective granules to the surface, and they create a waterproof barrier against moisture infiltration.

Over time, UV radiation, thermal cycling, and rainfall deplete these oils. As the oils evaporate, shingles become brittle, granules detach, and the waterproofing degrades. This process is irreversible with conventional treatments — until nanotechnology changed the equation.
