The Science Behind GoNano Roof Rejuvenation

Peer-reviewed research, independent testing, and product documentation supporting nanotechnology-based asphalt shingle restoration.

Why Evidence Matters in Roof Rejuvenation

Asphalt shingles degrade through a well-understood process: UV radiation and thermal cycling oxidise the bitumen binder, causing it to harden, crack, and lose the plasticising oils that give shingles their flexibility and water-shedding ability. Granule loss accelerates as the binder weakens, and once granules are gone, the underlying mat is exposed to direct UV — the final stage before failure.

GoNano products interrupt this process by reintroducing bio-based oils and nano-silica particles that penetrate the shingle surface, restore flexibility, and form a hydrophobic barrier. The science behind this approach is documented in independent peer-reviewed research on nano-silica modified bitumen — the same material class used in GoNano formulations.

This page consolidates the technical evidence base: published research on nano-silica and bitumen, product specifications, warranty terms, environmental certifications, and the physical mechanism by which rejuvenation extends roof service life.

Degradation science

How Asphalt Shingles Age — and How Rejuvenation Works

Phase 1

Oxidative hardening

UV radiation and heat cause bitumen to oxidise. The aromatic oils that keep bitumen flexible evaporate or polymerise, leaving a progressively harder, more brittle binder. This is the root cause of shingle cracking and curling.

Phase 2

Granule loss

As the binder hardens, its grip on the embedded mineral granules weakens. Granules dislodge under rain impact and thermal stress. Granules are the primary UV shield for the underlying fibreglass mat — their loss accelerates degradation.

Phase 3

Mat exposure and failure

With granules gone, the fibreglass mat is exposed to direct UV. The mat degrades rapidly, shingles crack through, and water infiltration begins. At this stage, replacement is the only option.

Intervention

GoNano rejuvenation

Applied during Phase 1 or early Phase 2, GoNano bio-based oils replenish the plasticisers lost to oxidation, restoring flexibility. Nano-silica particles fill micro-cracks and form a hydrophobic surface barrier. The result is a shingle that behaves measurably younger.

Key finding

Hydrophobic nano-silica treatment significantly improved aggregate-bitumen bond strength under freeze-thaw cycling, reducing moisture-induced damage — a critical factor in BC's climate.

Relevance to GoNano

Directly applicable to BC's wet climate: GoNano's hydrophobic nano-silica barrier reduces moisture infiltration and freeze-thaw damage in shingle granule bonds.

Sustainability

Environmental Case for Rejuvenation Over Replacement

11 million
tonnes of asphalt shingles sent to landfill annually in North America
~1 tonne
of shingle waste generated by a typical residential roof replacement
60–80%
of a roof's embodied carbon is in the shingles themselves
0 landfill
waste generated by GoNano rejuvenation — no tear-off required

Asphalt shingle disposal is a significant and largely unaddressed environmental problem. Shingles are difficult to recycle — the fibreglass mat, mineral granules, and bitumen binder are bonded together in a way that makes separation economically impractical at scale. The result is that the vast majority of replaced shingles go directly to landfill. GoNano rejuvenation eliminates this waste stream entirely: no tear-off, no disposal, no new manufacturing. The environmental benefit compounds over the warranty period — a 15-year rejuvenation treatment defers one full replacement cycle, keeping approximately one tonne of material out of landfill.
